Cerro
San Cristobal
You
cannot miss St. Christopher's Hill (Cerro San Cristobal). Almost 15-metres high Virgin Mary white statue atop
of it can be seen from almost everywhere - especially during the night, when
statue is perfectly illuminated. The hill is a part of Parque
Metropolitano, a huge municipal park which was
conceived and still is considered as a green lung of Santiago. You can climb it by foot, you can arrive on the top
with your car, but the best, the most spectacular way, is to take either the
cable car or funicular. The summit of the Cerro is 860 metres above sea level,
and almost 300 metres above the rest of the city. That’s why it is the most
recommended place to see the full view of Santiago. And during a clear day it's also possible to see the
beautiful snowy Andean peaks. Up on the hill you will find a zoological garden,
a restaurant, gifts shops, picnic areas and a chapel. On the neighbouring Tuphaue hill, close to the intermediary cable-car station
there is a swimming pool and very interesting botanical garden (Jardín Botánico Mapulemu). The hill is also a popular perfect place to get
some exercise, play sports or ride a bicycle.
